In the early hours of Monday morning, tragedy struck one of Northern Nevada’s largest resort-casinos when a shooting broke out at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. A Quick Police Response Prevents Further Loss

According to local authorities, Reno police responded within minutes of the first 911 calls, confronting the suspect near the resort’s northwest side. The confrontation escalated into an officer-involved shooting, after which the suspect—whose identity has not yet been released—was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition remains unknown.

Officials have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to public safety, and the Grand Sierra Resort was quickly secured. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting, as the community reels from the violence.

Victims and Casualties

The shooting left two individuals dead on the scene. Three others suffered serious injuries and remain hospitalized. In addition to the primary victims, several bystanders sustained non-life-threatening injuries, including a reported bullet graze and injuries sustained while fleeing the area.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased pending family notification.

Investigation Underway

The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation, with support from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada State Police, and federal partners. Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and working to determine whether the shooter had any relationship to the victims or the resort itself.

Forensic teams spent much of the day documenting evidence from the valet area and adjacent locations, as several floors of the resort were temporarily closed to guests.

Local Officials React

In a statement released later in the day, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve called the shooting “a heartbreaking day for our city” and praised law enforcement for their quick and decisive action.

“We are incredibly grateful to our first responders whose courage likely prevented even more tragedy,” said Mayor Schieve.

City Councilmember Devon Reese also released a statement expressing sorrow and concern over what he described as “a tragic reminder of the epidemic of gun violence that continues to plague communities across the nation.”
