The baseball world is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures. Ryne Sandberg, the Hall of Fame second baseman and iconic face of the Chicago Cubs, has passed away at the age of 65, following a battle with metastatic prostate cancer.
A Career Defined by Excellence
Sandberg spent 15 seasons in the Major Leagues — most of them with the Cubs — and left an indelible mark on the game. Known for his all-around talent, he finished his career with a .285 batting average, 282 home runs, 1,061 RBIs, and 344 stolen bases.
He was a 10-time All-Star, 9-time Gold Glove winner, and the 1984 National League MVP, a season forever etched in history thanks to the legendary “Sandberg Game.” On June 23, 1984, Sandberg hit game-tying home runs in both the 9th and 10th innings, driving in 7 runs in an unforgettable 12–11 Cubs win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Louis Cardinals.
Beyond the Field
After retiring, Sandberg stayed close to the game. He managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 2013 to 2015 and later became a familiar face as a pre- and post-game analyst. He also played a pivotal role in mentoring young infielders and remained an active ambassador for the Cubs organization.
In June 2024, the Cubs honored him with a statue outside Wrigley Field on the 40th anniversary of the Sandberg Game — a lasting tribute to his impact on the franchise and the city.
A Legacy that Transcends Generations
“Ryne Sandberg was a Chicago Cubs legend and one of the most complete players in the history of Major League Baseball,” said Commissioner Rob Manfred. “His power, speed, and work ethics set the standard for what a second baseman could be.”
Jed Hoyer, Cubs President of Baseball Operations, added:
“He was a superhero in this city. When you think of Chicago sports legends, you think of Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, and Ryne Sandberg. No one carried the weight of their fame more gracefully than he did.”
Sandberg was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, solidifying his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
